A system and method for monitoring a signal includes a monitoring display and an automation system receiving the content signal and either captures an I-frame of the content signal or encodes the content signal into an MPEG signal. The automation system communicates the I-frame or MPEG encoded signal to a display.

1. A method for previewing content comprising:
communicating a content signal having content therein to an automation system; encoding the content signal at the automation system to form an encoded content signal; modifying the content of the content signal to form a modified content signal at the automation system; encoding the modified content signal to form an encoded modified content signal; communicating the encoded content signal and the encoded modified content signal to a monitoring display; decoding the encoded content signal and the encoded modified content signal to form the content signal and the modified content signal associated with the monitoring display; and after decoding, simultaneously displaying the content signal and the modified content signal on the monitoring display.
