A control solution for use with an electrochemical system, the electrochemical system configured to measure the amount of an analyte in a sample, the control solution comprising: (a) a predetermined amount of the analyte; and (b) a predetermined amount of an internal reference compound, the predetermined amount of the internal reference compound being dependent upon the predetermined amount of analyte such that the presence of said internal reference compound is detectable by the electrochemical system, the internal reference compound having a redox potential that is at least 100 mV higher than the potential required to measure oxidation of the analyte, such that the control solution is distinguishable from the sample based on one or more currents generated in response to one or more potentials applied to the control solution by the electrochemical system.
