The registration includes receiving a reference image; receiving a sensed image; computing an approximate image transformation between the reference image and the sensed image; finding plural candidate tie points by utilizing template matching; applying radiometric filtering to at least a portion of the plural candidate tie points; applying geometric filtering to at least a portion of the plural candidate tie points; computing a calculated image transformation using candidate points of the plural candidate points that were not filtered out by the radiometric and geometric filtering; transforming the sensed image using the calculated image transformation; and registering the sensed image with the reference image.

A computer-implemented method of registering plural images using a computer processor and computer memory, wherein computer code stored in the computer memory causes the computer processor to perform the steps of: receiving a reference image; receiving a sensed image; computing an approximate image transformation between the reference image and the sensed image; selecting as a search window a subportion of the sensed image; determining if at least one of the reference image and the sensed image includes sensor model information; performing orthorectification on at least one of the search window and a template window of the reference image using the sensor model information to correct image geometry such that an image pixel scale is uniform across the at least one of the search window and the template window on which orthorectification is performed; generating, after the step of performing orthorectification, a transformed search window by applying the approximate image transformation to the search window, such that the template window and the transformed search window have the same image pixel scale; finding plural candidate tie points by utilizing template matching between the template window of the reference image and the transformed search window, wherein the template window consists of a subportion of the reference image; applying radiometric filtering to at least a portion of the plural candidate tie points found by template matching to filter out a number of the plural candidate tie points found by template matching; applying geometric filtering to at least a portion of the plural candidate tie points found by template matching to filter out a number of the plural candidate tie points found by template matching; computing an image transformation using candidate points of the plural candidate points that were filtered by the radiometric and geometric filtering but not filtered out by the radiometric and geometric filtering; and registering a transformed, sensed image with the reference image by transforming the sensed image using the calculated image transformation.
