PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device having improved color reproducibility and brightness.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a backlight that emits non-polarized blue light; a reflective polarizing layer that is disposed on an outgoing side of the backlight and converts the blue light into linearly polarized light; a quantum rod layer that is disposed on a side of the reflective polarizing layer where the blue linearly polarized light outgoes and that converts the blue linearly polarized light into red linearly polarized light and green linearly polarized light by use of a plurality of quantum rods; and a liquid crystal panel that is disposed on a side where the red linearly polarized light and the green linearly polarized light outgo. In the quantum rod layer, the major axis of the quantum rod is parallel to the polarization direction of the blue linearly polarized light outgoing from the reflective polarizing layer.
