This method for manufacturing an optical element includes: a heating step of heating an optical material (100) to a first temperature that is higher than a transition point; a pressing step of pressing the optical material (100) with a first mold (upper mold (11)) and a second mold (lower mold (12)) on opposite sides of the optical material (100); a first cooling step of cooling the optical material (100) to a second temperature that is higher than a strain point and lower than the first temperature while pressing the optical material (100) with a predetermined load with the first mold and the second mold; a releasing step of releasing the predetermined load at a set velocity which is greater than a velocity obtained in advance as a velocity at which elastic deformation of the optical material (100) is prioritized over viscous deformation when the load is released; and a second cooling step of cooling the optical material (100) to a third temperature that is lower than the second temperature. |
