PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a target article recognition apparatus capable of shortening time for recognizing a pedestrian if a number of candidates for an image portion of the pedestrian from a pickup image of a camera are extracted.SOLUTION: A target article recognition apparatus 10 includes: a candidate image extraction part 12 for extracting, from a pickup image 21 taken by a camera 2, a candidate image portion 22 that is an image portion of a target article that is possibly a pedestrian; a distance calculation part 13 for calculating a distance between the camera 2 and an actual spatial position corresponding to the extracted candidate image portion; and a candidate image determination part 14 for determining, if a given number k of candidate image portions are extracted, the candidate image portions of which the corresponding actual spatial position belongs to a determination zone R in which the corresponding actual space position is within first and second given distance ranges (where the second distance is larger than the first) that are distance from the camera 2 in a direction of imaging thereof, with a width in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the imaging direction within a given size, that a candidate image portion 22 of which the corresponding spatial position belongs to the determination zone R being an image portion of a pedestrian has a low possibility. |
