In a thermal regenerator in which air is heated by turbine exhaust gases in a disc-type matrix enclosed in a casing, the exhaust gases pass through the casing and the air passes through ducts arranged within the casing which are entirely surrounded by the exhaust gases, each air duct 22c abutting the matrix face through an interposed fluid-pressurized seal, and covering an elliptical area extending over one third to one half of the matrix face. In the form shown the casing comprises two circular castings 1A and 1B spaced apart by tie members 3, Fig. 4, and is sealed at its periphery by a cylindrical bellows 4. The matrix 2 has a foramimous core of ceramic material between ceramic rings 6 and 7, and is centralized and supported by three equidistant sets of rollers 13, Fig. 5, which bear upon its rim. Two sets of the rollers are rigidly mounted and the other set is flexibly mounted on springs, the matrix being rotated by a pinion (not shown) which meshes with ring gear 9 separated from, but in frictional contact with the ceramic ring 6, by pairs of tongues 8A located on a cylindrical band 8 between said ring 6 and ring gear 9. Seals 17 and 18 between the casing and the ceramic ring 6 of the matrix are bolted to the casing 1B and to a resiliently mounted annular plate 19 respectively. The intake air to the turbine is conveyed to and from the heat exchanger by ducts 22 bolted to the casing sections 1A and 1B and by the ducts 22c which resiliently abut the matrix on opposite sides. The ducts 22c are each formed with seatings 27 (Fig. 6) carrying cylindrical metal bellows 28 which form pressure capsules controlling the sealing pressure of the ducts 22c on the matrix faces, the fluid pressure in the capsules being maintained through a connecting pipe (not shown) for a pressure liquid or gas. The exhaust gases are conveyed to the heat exchanger by two ducts 33, Fig. 5, formed in each of the casing sections 1A and 1B. A peripheral seal including a cylindrical metal bellows 34 is provided between the casing element 1A and the floating plate 19. Fig. 7 shows a modification wherein the plate 19 is replaced by a casing part 35 which abuts the matrix through a seal 36. A number of variants of this seal are described (Figs. 16-21, not shown). A modification of the air duct 22c having a wall formed with one or more corrugations is also described (Figs. 22-27, not shown).
