PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To acquire initial white reference data for shading correction, which achieves shading correction that is more satisfactory compared to the conventional art on image data obtained by reading operation of a reading unit.SOLUTION: A document reader includes: a document feeding section; contact glass to which a document is transported from the document feeding section; a white reference member arranged on a front surface side of the contact glass; a reading unit which is installed on a back side of the contact glass and reads an image of the document that is brought into contact with a surface of the contact glass or the image of the white reference member in a main scanning direction; and a positioning member for selectively positioning a position of the white reference member when the reading unit reads to a first reading position which is the same position as the document that is brought into contact with the front surface of the contact glass and a second reading position which is a position separated in a direction orthogonal to the surface of the contact glass from the surface of the contact glass by a document feeding interval for feeding the document between the contact glass and the white reference member.
