PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of reduction in transmission speed.SOLUTION: An optical transmission system 1 transmits a multiplex optical signal obtained by multiplexing a plurality of optical signals having different wavelengths, by using an optical element formed from material including silicon. The optical transmission system 1 comprises: a first light source for outputting light having a first wavelength of the wavelengths; a second light source for outputting light having a second wavelength that is the same as the first wavelength or different from the first wavelength; and a first detection unit for detecting abnormality of the light from the first light source. The optical transmission system 1, when the abnormality has been detected, transmits the multiplex optical signal including an optical signal obtained by modulating the light from the second light source, instead of an optical signal obtained by modulating the light from the first light source.
