Redox polymers which comprise a cross-linked copolymer of a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer and a polyethylenically unsaturated monomer which contain (a) quinonoid or hydroquinonoid groups, and (b) amine, carboxylic acid or salt groups may be prepared by reacting the copolymer containing quinonoid or hydroquinonoid groups and halomethyl groups with an amine, thioglycollic acid or glycollic acid (see Specification 1,009,905). The copolymer may be derived from styrene, vinyl toluene, a -methyl styrene or vinyl naphthalene and divinylbenzene, or of styrene and trivinylbenzene, vinyltoluene and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and may have a macroreticular structure. The copolymer may be chloromethylated and then reacted in such a way that only some of the chloromethyl groups react in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts reagent, with a quinone or hydroquinone, each having at least one hydrogen atom on a ring carbon available for substitution, or a diether or diester of such hydroquinone. |
