In a mechanical seal for a rotatable shaft 3 extending through a wall 1, e.g. of a centrifugal pump, turbine or autoclave, the stationary and rotatable seal members 6, 9 are enclosed by a jacket which consists of a part 26 rotatable with the seal member 9 and of a part 21 fixed relative to the wall 1 and defines an annular chamber 28 within which is located a ring 29 adjacent a passage 31 extending outwardly of the chamber and formed between flanges 32, 33 thereof, pressure fluid being introduced within the chamber through an inlet opening 22, an annular zone 25 and an annular passage 34 so that it will urge the ring 29 against the flanges 32, 33 to seal off the passage 31 against escape of the pressure fluid. The pressure fluid may act as a quenching, absorbing or cooling medium. The seal member 6 may be of bronze or carbon and is affixed to a mounting member 7 secured to the wall 1. The seal member 9, which may be of steel, is caused to rotate with the shaft 3 by drive pins 12 seated in a collar 13 secured to the shaft and is urged against the seal member 6 by means of springs 18 and by the fluid being sealed leaking into an annular chamber 36, an O-ring 11 providing a seal between the member 9 and the shaft. Alternatively, the chamber 36 is omitted. The jacket part 21 is shown integral with the mounting member or it may be a separate member secured thereto. The part 26 is secured to the collar 13 by a set screw 27. An outlet opening 23 for the pressure fluid is provided in the part 21.
