A spectrophotometric sampling cell comprises two sheets of silver chloride, polyethylene or other spectrophotometrically acceptable material arranged substantially parallel one above the other, the edge portions of the sheets being fused together under heat and pressure and the centre portions forming a cell chamber 8, the edge portions having one or more conduits 6, 7 formed therein to enable liquid to be introduced into chamber 8. To strengthen the cell, metal plates 10 having windows 11 therein may be secured to sheets of fibrous material 9 that are cut so as to avoid the raised portions of the material forming the cell. Alternatively the cell may be secured to two moulded plates of a rigid inert plastic material such as a phenol-formaldehyde resin. During construction, a polytetrafluoroethylene spacer is introduced between the sheets forming the cell, and after most of the edge portions have been fused together, it is withdrawn and the remaining edge portions are fused together. Silver tubes may be fused on to the ends of the conduits such as 6, 7. When the samples to be examined are obtained from a gas chromatograph the conduits may be elongated so that the cell may be cooled in a bath of liquid oxygen or other refrigerant and the gas condensed in the inlet conduit. |
