Organotin compounds of formula RnSn(CH2OR1)4- n, wherein n is 2 or 3 and R and R1 are alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radicals, are modifying agents for lubricating oils.ALSO:Organotin compounds of formula RnSn(CH2OR1)4- n wherein n is 2 or 3 and R and R1 are alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radicals are used for curing organosilicon polymers. In examples a mixture of polydimethylsiloxane oil and ethyl polysilicate with bis-(ethoxymethyl)diethyltin is converted to an elastic solid, and a paste of polydimethylsiloxane oil with dry silica, mixed with methyltriacetoxysilane and bis-(methoxymethyl) dibutyl tin forms an elastic, non-sticky film when spread on a glass plate.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula RnSn(CH2OR1)4- n in which n is 2 or 3, and R and R1 are alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radicals, preferably alkyl radicals of up to 4 carbon atoms, cyclopentyl, methylcyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, methyl-cyclohexyl or benzyl radicals. In particular R may be an alkyl radical of up to 4 carbon atoms and R1 methyl or ethyl. The compounds are prepared by condensing RnSnX4- n, wherein X is halogen, preferably chlorine or bromine, with 4-n molecular proportions of a chloromethyl ether ClCH2OR1 under anhydrous conditions in the presence of magnesium, activated with preferably mercuric chloride, and a cyclic ether, e.g. tetrahydrofuran. Suitably an excess of magnesium and the chloromethyl ether is used. Part of the chloromethyl ether may be added to the magnesium and cyclic ether and after reaction has begun, the organotin compound and the remainder of the chloromethyl ether are added separately or simultaneously, the temperature being maintained between 10 DEG and 40 DEG C. The reaction mass is hydrolysed with water, mineral acid or an ammonium salt solution and the desired product isolated from the organic fraction, e.g. by distillation. It may be converted into a chloromethyl organotin compound by treatment with acetyl chloride.
