The present invention relates to an apparatus, a method, and a computer program for detecting an object by using a visible light image and a thermal image. According an embodiment of the present invention, the apparatus for detecting an object may include: a background image generation unit for generating a visible light background image and a thermal image background image from a visible light image and a thermal image obtained from a visible light camera to which an optical axis is joined in parallel and a thermal camera, respectively; a visible light object area detection unit for detecting a visible light object area by using an image of difference between the visible light background image and the input visible light image; a first thermal image object area detection unit for detecting a first thermal image object area by using an image of difference between the thermal image background image and the input thermal image; a second thermal image object area detection unit for converting the visible light object area into a coordinate of the thermal image, mapping the visible light object area to the input thermal image, and detecting a second thermal image object area by using an image of difference between the input thermal image and the thermal image background image with respect to a mapping area of the input thermal image; and an object detection unit for detecting the object by combining the first thermal image object area with the second thermal image object area.
