Naphthalenes are separated from petroleum fractions by reacting with an alkali metal in the presence of an aliphatic mono-ether having a methoxy group and/or a polyether derived from an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol in which all hydroxy groups are etherified to form an alkali metal compound of the naphthalene which is separated and decomposed to recover the naphthalene. The feed may boil in the range 375-600 DEG F. and is reacted with alkali metal dispersed in an inert solvent which may be the ether using, if desired, a dispersing aid. The ether preferably forms at least 50% wt. of the reaction medium and reaction is effected at below 0 DEG C., e.g. -20 DEG to -50 DEG C. The metal compound is precipitated by adding a C4-C10 hydrocarbon, filtered off and decomposed by heating to 50 DEG C. at 100-200 mm. Hg. or by adding a large quantity of light hydrocarbon. The alkali metal and ether are recovered and re-used.
