A titanium oxide/zinc oxide pigment is prepared by heating titanium dioxide with zinc oxide in hexagonal, needle-like form having a sulphur content, calculated as SO3 of at least 0,1%. Heating is effected at 500 DEG -1000 DEG C. and 0,5-4 moles of titanium dioxide per mole of zinc oxide may be used. Calcining is continued until 5% or less free zinc oxide is present, a solid solution being formed. The zinc oxide may be prepared by attenuating zinc vapour with a non-oxidizing gas and feeding the mixture with a small stoichiometric excess of oxygen to a chamber at a space velocity per minute of 0,4 or less, the temperature being preferably from 950 DEG -1200 DEG C. The sulphur content is controlled by the use of sulphurcontaining zinc ores and by the sulphur content of the fuel used for the reduction thereof to metallic zinc.
|
