The processing unit has a working spindle (15) including a rotary drive rotatably mounted in housing (1). A tool holder with a clamping element is provided for releasably positioning a tool shank in the tool holder. A measuring device with a sensor system detects the position and monitors condition of the shank in the tool holder. An electronic evaluation unit evaluates the measurement output received from the sensor system. The sensor system includes axial sensors and radial sensors arranged in an annular rotor (16), which is detachably fastened to the front end of the working spindle.
