A computer-implemented method is provided for displaying status during a wireless transmission of a glucose measure from a handheld glucose meter (12) to a diabetes management application residing on a portable computing device (16). A handheld glucose meter having a user interface for displaying status during transmission of a blood glucose measure is provided. Further, a computer-implemented method for transmitting a glucose measure automatically from a handheld glucose meter to a diabetes management application residing on a portable computing device is provided.
