Reactor safety rods are moved from a normal to a shut-down position by means of an impact device comprising an electromagnetic surge impulse generator, there being one or more thrust transmission members arranged between the impact device striker and the safety rod. The generator preferably comprises a coil and an adjacent copper short-circuit ring acting as a striker. Thrust is preferably transmitted to the safety rod via a plurality of thrust transmission members of reducing mass per unit length towards the safety rod; they may be of hollow cylindrical construction, and filled with lead. The safety rods may achieve maximum velocity within 1 millisecond of generator actuation; the thrust generated is preferably several times greater than the safety rod retaining force so that safety rod movement is unaffected by the retaining mechanism. If the retaining device is also electromagnetic, it may be structurally and electrically combined with the impulse generator. The safety element may be fuel, neutron absorber, or in two sections, one of each material.
