The device has a lens (54) for deflecting optical rays (50) in the direction of a material strand (28), where the optical rays are adjusted parallel to the material strand. Detectors (81, 88) detect the reflected rays (55) from the material strand. The lens is formed such that the optical rays have a convergence in an area of an upper surface of the material strand. The convergence is such that a quantity of rays illuminates the area on the upper surface of the material strand.
