The present invention relates to a mobile terminal which can sense a tap applied to a display portion while the display portion is inactivated, and to a control method thereof. The mobile terminal comprises: a display portion; a sensing portion which senses a plurality of taps applied to the display portion; and a control portion which executes a voice recognition function while maintaining an inactivated state when a pattern made of the taps, sensed while the display portion is inactivated, is matched with a preset pattern. The control portion executes the voice recognition function when a tap lastly applied among the taps is maintained.
