Platinum and palladium complexes are disclosed that can be useful as narrow band phosphorescent emitters. Also disclosed are methods for preparing and using the platinum and palladium complexes.

A complex of the formula: wherein: M is platinum or palladium, Ar1 is a substituted or unsubstituted pyridinyl, isoquinolinyl, quinazolinyl, or imidazolyl ring when M is palladium, and Ar1 is a substituted or unsubstituted pyridinyl, isoquinolinyl, quinazolinyl, imidazolyl pyrazolyl, quinolinyl, triazolyl, benzimidazolyl, benzoxazolyl, or benzothiazolyl ring when M is platinum, each of Ar2, Ar3, and Ar4 is independently a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl or pyridyl ring; Ar5 is a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl ring, Ar6 is a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl ring, or is absent, each of X1, X2, X3, and X4 is independently a carbon or nitrogen atom, each of A1 and A2 is independently a nitrogen, carbon, boron, phosphorus, or silicon atom, and each of A1 and A2 is independently optionally substituted, and each of b1 and b2 is independently present or absent, and if present is an oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, carbon, boron, phosphorus, or silicon atom.
