PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a practically useful organic EL element which has high efficiency and high driving stability while being operated at a low voltage.SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element includes light-emitting layers between an anode and a cathode facing each other. At least one of the light-emitting layers contains a host material containing two or more kinds of host compounds, and at least one luminescent dopant. The host material contains a first host compound selected from indolocarbazole compounds having one or two indolocarbazole rings, and a second host compound selected from carborane compounds having three or more carborane rings.
