An optical amplifier receives a seed laser having a wavelength of 1064nm. Amplification occurs in a segmented Nd:YVO4 gain medium pumped with a pump source. Each segment of the gain medium has a length and dopant concentration, and each segment collectively enhances power absorption in the gain medium enabling usage of a higher power end pump which increases pulse energy and average power of the laser. A first end of the gain medium comprises a wedge surface on which a quad-pass optical amplifier is arranged to achieve high extraction efficiency. |
