PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent reduction of recordable areas due to fragmentation and to prevent recording halt.SOLUTION: A recording device includes: a memory for storing input stream data; recording means that records the stream data stored in the memory onto a recording medium; measurement means that measures a degree of fragmentation in each of a plurality of sub-areas of the recording medium; and control means that controls a first mode for selectively writing data onto sub-areas with degrees of fragmentation greater than a predetermined level and a second mode for selectively writing data onto sub-areas with degrees of fragmentation no greater than the predetermined level. The control means switches either to the first mode or the second mode depending on the situation to write initial stream data supplied after start of recording, and uses the second mode to write data after completion of the initial writing until the end of recording. |
