1,038,978. Treating viscose rayon fibres. COURTAULDS Ltd. June 18, 1963 [June 19, 1962], No. 23473/62. Heading B5B. The extensibility of viscose rayon fibres having a crystallinity of more than 50% (measured by an X-ray method) is increased by impregnating the freshly-spun, never-dried, regenerated fibre in a relaxed state with a solution containing 0À5 to 8À0% by weight of caustic soda at 20‹ to 80‹ C. for at least 5 minutes. The caustic soda solution may be applied to the fibres as a desulphurizing step, instead of conventional desulphurizing agents. In examples, samples of a viscose prepared and spun as disclosed in Specification 915,803 are desulphurized in 1-6% caustic soda solutions for 25-30 minutes at 50-70‹ C.
