High molecular weight aromatic vinyl or vinylidene polymers are chloromethylated and/or cross-linked by reaction with a mixture of equimolar quantities of methylol and chlorosulphonic acid. The polymer may be derived from styrene, vinyl toluene or styrene and divinyl benzene or triacryloyl hexahydrotriazine. The reaction mixture may include a solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, ethylene chloride or 1,2-dichloropropane and may contain 1-5 equivalents of the reaction mixture. The polymer may be in bead form, already cross-linked and may be swelled in e.g. ethylene chloride. The chloromethylated polymer may be aminated with an aq. solution of trimethylamine in the presence of ethylene chloride to produce an anion exchanger, e.g. as a membrane. Moulded articles, e.g. tubes, pipes and films, may be formed. |
