A method of modifying the structure of carbon black produced by continuous cracking of hydrocarbons comprises vaporizing and pyrolysing continuously in a furnace a liquid feedstock to which has been added between 0.1-10,000 p.p.m. by weight of feedstock of an alkali metal in the form of an alkali metal base dissolved in an alcohol. The latter may be a C3- 5 aliphatic alcohol, or a mixture thereof. The alkali metal base may be a hydroxide, propoxide, butoxide or pentanoxide of Na, K, Cs or Rb. The alcoholic alkali metal base solution may be added directly to the feedstock or it may be added to a portion of the feedstock which is later introduced into the main feedstock.
|
