Apparatus for treating agglomerative materials, e.g. sodium orthophosphates, in a fluidized bed 5 by repeatedly subjecting the material to a grinding action, comprises a fluidized bed reactor 4, a mechanical grinder, means 6 to pass the material of the bed through the grinder and means to return it to the bed. The grinder may be located in the bed or in a duct outside it. As described, the grinder comprises a rotatable screw 6 mounted in a perforated housing 8. Material drawn into the housing through an opening 9 is forced against a perforated plate 10 until it has been ground finely enough to pass through the holes in the plate. Material extruded is further crushed by a perforated scraper disc 11. The reactor comprises a windbox 1 and, a gas inlet 2 separated by a distribution plate 3 from the bed container 4. The worm grinder may alternatively be mounted vertically with its opening mounted at the centre of the distribution plate, and its shaft secured to scraper blades which shape agglomerator material from the plate. The reactor may also contain e.g. ball bearings which are agitated by the fluidizing gases to break up agglomerations of materials.
