1,069,610. Electromagnetic shaping. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. Nov. 17, 1965 [Nov. 30, 1964]. No. 48328/65. Heading B3Q. A conductive workpiece is electromagnetically deformed by placing it within a generally annular conductive fieldshaper 12 and passing current pulses through spiral coils 20 and 22 disposed on each side of the field-shaper. The field-shaper is formed in two segments (14) and (16) (Fig. 1, not shown). by an insulating strip (50), thereby allowing the segments to be positioned around a large workpiece which is unable to pass axially through the space 18 defined by the segments. The coils are mounted in insulating plates 36 and 38, while further insulating plates 40 and 42 separate the coils from metal-supporting plates 32 and 34. Pneumatic cylinders (54) urge the segments together. One of the segments may be laterally slidable from the supporting structure, or the two segments may be hinged together at their outer edges. |
