A method for gas leak event detection and selection, the method comprising: providing a series of gas concentration measurements ci indexed by an integer i; detecting peaks pi in the series of gas concentration measurements ci, wherein each peak pi has a corresponding amplitude ai; computing a moving minimum mci given by the minimum of cj, wherein j is an index in a range i−nmin+k1≦j≦i+k1, wherein nmin is a moving minimum window width, and wherein k1≦nmin is a first window offset; computing a moving standard deviation σi of mcj, wherein j is an index in a range i−nb+k2≦j≦i+k2, wherein nb is a moving standard deviation window width, and wherein k2≦nb is a second window offset; performing event selection by computing a ratio Ri of peak amplitude ai at peak pi to the moving standard deviation σi of at peak pi and selecting events that have Ri exceeding a predetermined threshold condition; and providing selected events as an output.
