Accounting for virtualized IT infrastructure and innovative electrical power saving rules

A plurality of services is hosted on a mutable configuration of one or more execution units. A method for hosting the services comprises steps of determining a computational power provided by the execution units, determining an electric power consumed by the execution units, determining a cost per service based on the electric power (kWh) and the computational power and workunits, determining a service performance and adjusting the configuration in order to improve a configuration efficiency, expressible by a relationship between the cost per service and the performance. The invention provides a technique to find a compute node or several compute nodes to start new services, or to find compute nodes in case of hardware failure or disaster scenarios with optimized availability and price performance ratios and to shutdown inefficient compute nodes through relocation of the application instance to more efficient compute nodes.
