Catalysts for the activation of hydrogen and/or oxygen are prepared by precipitation from a heavy metal salt with an alkali metal borohydride in an organic solvent e.g. C1-C6 alkanols, dimethyl formamide, and/or pyridine, preferably between - 40 DEG C. and +10 DEG C. Borides are precipitated from salts of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, but the metals Pt, Pd, Os, Ag, An are precipitated. Heavy metal salts may be acetates or perchlorates of Fe, Co, Ni, Pt, Pd, Os, Cu, Ag, Au, Hg. For Ni salts, a small amount of Cu, Au, Fe, Pt may be added. The catalyst is used in a catalytic electrode in a fuel cell. In examples sintered porous nickel bodies are impregnated with the metal salt solution and then with the borohydride solution.ALSO:Catalysts for the activation of hydrogen and/or oxygen are prepared by precipitation from a heavy metal salt with an alkali metal borohydride in an organic solvent, e.g. C1-C6 alkanols, dimethyl formamide, and/or pyridine, preferably between - 40 DEG and + 10 DEG C.
