[Class 2 (iii)] Lead styphnate, the normal lead salt of trinitroressorcinol, used .in the production of primers, in manufactured as small plate-like crystals of average size 0.007 cm. x 0.005 cm. x 0.0015 cm., This is less dangerous in handling thanthe prismatic, crystals by dissolving styphnic acid, containing 'as impurities the nitro derivatives of resorufin, indophenol and/or resazurin, in caustic soda, adding a lead nitrate-acetic acid solution thereto at a temperature of 55‹C. until precipitation of lead styphnate in the form of a gel occurs, and then adding additional lead nitrate-acetic acid solution with continuous stirring at 60‹C. until lead styphnate is converted into crystals. The factors which control the precipitation of the lead styphnate as a hydrated gel are the control of temperature, concentration of sodium styphnate and regulation of the addition of lead nitrate-acetic acid solution together with the correct ratio of sodium hydrande to acetic acid. 'After the precipitation as a gel, rapid transformation to the crystalline state is necessary, controlled by increase in temperature or increase in concentration of acetic acid. If one of the factors is changed, the others may be varied to compensate for it.
