Olefinic hydrocarbons are isomerized by double bond migration by passing the olefine with or without a carrier gas over a supported catalyst comprising a major proportion of elemental nickel, the remaining minor proportion being nickel combined with sulphur, the atmoic ratio of sulphur to nickel in the catalyst being 0.01-0.4. The catalyst is prepared by treating a supported nickel catalyst with elemental sulphur, an organic sulphur compound, e.g. thiophene or a thiocycloalkene, hydrogen sulphide, carbon disulphide or mixtures thereof such that a minor proportion of the nickel is combined with sulphur. Isomerization temperatures of 50-250 DEG C. are specified. The olefines specified are 2- and 4-methylpentene-1 and 2,2 and 3-methylbutene-1 and pentene-1. |
