The present invention relates to a control method for easily controlling a mobile terminal based on a tapping input received on the rear of the mobile terminal, and to the mobile terminal. More specifically, the mobile terminal includes: a touch screen having a main display region exposed on a front surface thereof and an auxiliary display region exposed on a side surface; a sensing unit sensing a tapping input received on the back side of the mobile terminal; and a control unit determining a location where a thumb of a user touches based on a touch input received from the auxiliary display region, and controlling the touch screen to output at least one function icon focusing on the location where the thumb of the user touches, when the tapping input is sensed in a locking state of the touch screen.
