Method for removing the background of a scanned image, comprising: determining histograms, representing frequency distribution of pixel colour values, for each colour channel; determining a white point tracking profile for each colour channel, based on the graphs, that identifies, for each channel, a range of colour values statistically related to the mode colour value of that channel; modifying pixels within the white point tracking profile to a predetermined colour profile; and removing the modified pixels. White point compensation may be implemented. Black point may be identified using the lowest color value. The colour spectrum may be expanded. Histogram curves may be determined for bands in the image. The target white may be used to alter a gamma correction table. Standard deviation of colour values may determine the range surrounding the predominant colour component. Maximum colour value for each channel may be determined. Colour channels may form a colour space such as RGB (red, green, blue), CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black), YPbPr, YCbCr. Colour tone may represent brightness or intensity. |
