Linear polyphenylene sulphides and sulphoxides are halogenated with chlorine, bromine or iodine, and the halogenated polymers are reacted with divalent sulphur-yielding material to obtain cross-linked polymers. The halogenation may be carried out at - 40 DEG to 200 DEG C. the halogen atoms being attached to the aromatic nuclei and the product preferably having at least two halogen atoms for each chain. The halogenated polymers may be cross-linked by reaction with alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or transition metal sulphides at 150 DEG to 350 DEG C., either in amounts sufficient to react with all the halogen atoms, or in less than equivalent amounts, in which case the polymer contains residual halogen atoms. In examples, linear phenylene sulphide and sulphoxide polymers are brominated and then cross-linked by reaction with sodium sulphide.
|
