A roll capacitor comprises staggered metal, e.g. aluminium foil electrodes 22, 24, interwound with overlapping thermoplastic, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate dielectric foils 20 the winding terminating with plural over-wrapping turns enclosing a thermoplastic label insert 34 visible through the overlying foil. Terminal wires 26, 28 of, e.g., tinned copper or steel are attached by heating them by passing a heavy short duration current (Fig. 10, not shown) from a transformer and control unit and then forcing them into the capacitor ends by serrated rib forming jaws of e.g. stainless steel, whereby the plastic foil overlaps are melted, the wires brought into contact with the capacitor foils, and subsequently sealed and retained by plural transverse ribs 58 (Fig. 2) formed on cooling the molten plastic. Similarly leads may be attached to rolled electrolytic capacitors employing aluminium foils separated by fibrous e.g. paper separators retaining the electrolyte and enclosed in rolled thermoplastic foil; the capacitor being thereby sealed.
