<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a red phosphor having an emission peak with narrow half width and having excellent light emitting properties, and a process for producing the same; a phosphor-containing composition and a light-emitting device using the phosphor; and an image display and a lighting apparatus using the light-emitting device. <P>SOLUTION: A phosphor includes a crystalline phase having the chemical composition represented by the following formula [1], wherein a proportion of Mn is 0.1-40 mol.% based on the total amount of M<SP>4</SP>and Mn, and having a specific surface area of ≤1.3 m<SP>2</SP>/g.
