Process for retarding the evaporation of organic liquids

Premature evaporation of a solvent or solvents from an exposed composition, e.g. a floor wax, shoe-cream, cleaner polishing agent, lacquer or varnish is retarded by incorporating a partial ester of a di- or poly-glycerine and a monobasic fatty or hydroxy fatty acid (at least 8 C) in an amount within the range 0.1 to 10% by weight based on the solvent, of a composition comprising one or more non-volatile components and a major proportion of the volatile organic solvent or solvents. Solid hydrocarbons, hard or soft paraffins, ozokerite, crude or oxidized montan wax, stearin, ceresin, an ester or salt of montan wax, a ketone of a fatty acid, polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polyvinyl butyrate, a polymer based on acrylic or methacrylic acid ester, polyacrylonitrile, a polyester, a polyamide, a polyester amide, an alkyol resin, a glyptal resin, a synthetic or natural rubber or a natural resin may be the non-volatile component present. Fatty acids to form the partial ester are those derived from coconut oil, and palmitic, stearic, montanic, oxystearic, oleic, linoleic, or linolenic acids, and may be modified by a polybasic acid or anhydride. Many solvents are listed and the composition may include a solid filler and/or pigment. An example describes the addition of a di-glycerin-monostearate further esterified with adipic or phthalic acid, to a black shoe cream containing partially esterified montan wax oxidized with chromic acid, ozokerite, paraffin wax, turpentine, white spirit, and nigrosine base, to reduce the solvent loss.
