As shown, it is arranged to operate a large butterfly valve or boiler damper. Part of the valve casing 19 carries a plate-like support bracket 20 through which passes a spindle 26 with a torque arm 27 to which the actuator shaft 13 is pivotally connected at 30. The axis of the actuator operating shaft 13 lies in the plane defined by the central plane of the plate-like bracket 20 and is arranged so that its line of thrust also lies in said plane.
