PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: an ionic liquid having excellent lubricity even at a high temperature, which is applied on a magnetic layer surface of a thin film magnetic recording medium; a lubricant; and a magnetic recording medium.SOLUTION: The lubricant comprises an ionic liquid containing a conjugate acid (B) and a conjugate base (X) and being protic. The ionic liquid is represented by the following formula (1), and the conjugate base is any of a conjugate base of a sulfonic acid, a conjugate base of a sulfonimide, and a conjugate base of a trisulfonylmethide. (Rand Rare H or an aryl group; Ris a linear hydrocarbon group having 10 or more carbon atoms; and Ris H or a hydrocarbon group.)
