In an internal combustion engine having a cylinder supplied with lubricant pumped through a number of nozzles projecting through the cylinder wall, lubricant is pumped to each nozzle, or each several groups of nozzles, in turn. In an embodiment, an injection pump 10, Fig. 1, is operated by a cam 11 on a shaft 12, which is driven from the engine cam-shaft. The quantity of lubricant injected is controlled by a rack 13, Fig. 4. Three cylinders are to be lubri- Gated, each having eight nozzles fed by feed pipes 14, the feed pipes of each cylinder being connected to a separate distributer 15, 17, Fig. 1. Each distributer has a fixed top-plate 18, Fig. 5, and a rotatable member 9 which is driven by a worm-drive from the shaft 12. The pump 10 is connected to the top-plate 18 by a delivery-pipe 20, Fig. 2, and a banjo-union 21 which leads to a passage 22, Fig. 5, which emerges from the top-plate directly above the axis of rotation of the rotatable member 19 where it connects with a groove 23 therein. As the member 19 rotates, the outer end 24, Fig. 4, of the groove 23 connects in turn with banjo-unions 25 carrying the feed-pipes 14 to the nozzles. The three distributers 15-17 are so arranged that the groove 23 in the rotatable members 19 connect with the unions 25 in turn so that only one groove is connected with the union at any one time. Each nozzle is fed from a separate stroke of the pump 10 and the cam 11 is arranged on the shaft 12 so that the pump 10 injects when a groove 23 is opposite a union. In other embodiments, one pump and two or three distributers serve two or three cylinders which are not equally-spaced to each other so that injections which are not correctly timed are connected back to the pump suction; six distributers are arranged in pairs on each side of a shaft; and engines which have an odd number of cylinders are provided with a pump and distributer for each cylinder.</p> |
