Lightweight authentication for on-premise rich clients

Lightweight authentication for on-premise rich clients is described. The lightweight authentication mitigates the amount of software that is installed on a client machine for authentication purposes. A portion of an external website is hosted on an application executing on the rich client. The user can interact with the portion of the external website in order to enter credentials or other identification information. The entry of the credentials or other identification information is relayed to the external website for verification. If the verification is successful, the user can interact with various external websites utilizing the single verification.

a rich client configured to execute one or more local applications; and a control manager component configured to perform authentication with an external website, the authentication based on credential information obtained by the external website from another website to which the external website directs the rich client to establish authentication with a single sign-on service, the control manager component being associated with at least one of the one or more local applications, the authentication system configured to automatically switch from a first single sign-on application to a second single sign-on application.
