A catalyst for manufacturing unsaturated aldehyde and/or unsaturated carboxylic acid comprises a mixed oxide containing molybdenum, bismuth, and iron (or desirably constituted thereof), and has improved mechanical strength. The catalyst is manufactured by a method, which comprises the steps of: (1) obtaining a calcination product by primarily calcinating a dried product in molecular oxygen-containing gas atmosphere, after drying aqueous slurry or an aqueous solution containing a raw material of a catalyst; (2) obtaining a reduction product having 0.05 to 6% of mass loss by heating the calcination product obtained in step (1) in the presence of a reduction material; and (3) secondarily calcinating the reduction product obtained in step (2) in the molecular oxygen-containing gas atmosphere.
