PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zigzag sewing machine and a method for controlling the automatic temporary stop of the zigzag sewing machine which allow restart after the automatic temporary stop during the course of sewing a pattern row by combination sewing.SOLUTION: A zigzag sewing machine includes: a first storage device in which multiple pieces of pattern data each including attribute data and stitch data are stored; pattern selection means for sequentially selecting any piece of pattern data from among the multiple pieces of pattern data stored in the first storage device; a second storage device for storing the multiple pieces of pattern data selected by the pattern selection means as an arranged combined pattern; command data insertion means for inserting and adding temporary stop data at any position in the middle of a pattern data row forming the combined pattern stored in the second storage device; and temporary stop command means for supplying a temporary stop signal to a sewing machine drive part according to the temporary stop data inserted by the command data insertion means.
