Disclosed are a map image recognition system and a method based on OCR. The map recognition system can comprise: a recognition unit recognizing a character from an input image by using character recognition technology; a search unit searching a place name relevant to the character from a database which includes place name information; and a provision unit offering map information which includes the place name as a result of recognition of the input image.
