Methods and materials for improving nucleic acid or protein recovery from samples preserved in liquid cytological preservative solutions by utilizing scavenger molecules, such as hydrazine- and hydrazide-containing compounds, are provided. Lysis solutions comprising hydrazine- and hydrazide-containing compounds and kits comprising the same are also provided.
