Disclosed in the present invention is a composition comprising a Scutellaria alpina extract as an active component. The composition disclosed in the present invention reduces production of melanin or inhibits an activity of tyrosinase by comprising the Scutellaria alpina extract. Therefore, the Scutellaria alpina extract in the present invention has a skin whitening effect, thereby being widely used in a pharmaceutical or cosmetic field as a skin whitening composition.
